The Munchkins

Life with identical twins

What we’re reading now

on February 18, 2016

The girls are in a very good groove with their reading right now. Last year they mostly read books that they brought home from school as part of their book in a bag program. That worked okay, but they often didn’t have enough books at the right level for them. This year, they still track their nightly reading, but they can read whatever they want from home. It’s worked much, much better.

Last year we made regular visits to the library, but because that is their main source of reading material, we go weekly now. We have a few different libraries near us, but go to this biggest one because they have the best selection of comic books.

The books that really turned them into readers is the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. That book combined pictures with words in a way that kept them engaged in a longer story. We followed that up with the Captain Underpants series and from there we started hitting the library to broaden their horizons.

Right now like I said, they love comic books. When I say that, most people think super heroes, but you would be amazed at all of the graphic novels out there! They love Garfield, Babymouse, Nancy Drew (Vampire Slayer?!), and anything else they can get their hands on. They are also reading their way through the Geronimo Stilton books, of which there are approximately 1 million. They love all of them – Thea Stilton, Cavemice, Spacemice – doesn’t matter. This is the series that got them into the big books, books that are 200+ pages. I love this series.

They pick out all of their own books, my only request is that they not check out only comic books, there has to be at least a few chapter books in there. They are starting in on the Little House on the Prairie books, which I love. Delaney has checked out a few Goosebumps books, but I’m not sure if she will actually read those or not.

This stage of reading is amazing! They love to read, and they love going to the library and finding new books. A few times this winter we have all settled in by the fire to read as a family. It’s like a dream come true.
